WHY GREX PINS?

Not all brands of 23 gauge pins are created equal. Because 23 gauge pins are extremely fine, setting high standards for each of these attributes is much more critical than larger brad and finish nails. All Grex 23 Gauge Pins are manufactured from precision drawn wire to guarantee consistent accurate pin dimensions. And the tensile strength of the wire used is optimized for each of the different pin lengths.

These qualities minimize the potential for nail jams and prevent damage to your tool. They also make it possible for the pins to penetrate through very hard woods - that's any pin length ranging from 3/8" up to 2". We have proven results for these pins with your Grex Pinner, but they will surely make any 23 gauge pin nailer work better.

  • Manufactured to high standards to ensure consistency.
  • Precision drawn wire for accurate pin dimensions.
  • Wire tensile strength optimized by pin length
  • The most comprehensive range of 23 gauge pins in the industry.
  • Available in 14 different lengths from 3/8" to 2".
  • Available in standard galvanized and stainless steel.
  • Available in 10,000 pins per box or smaller 2,500 pin pack.

Note: All grex pins are manufactured to metric lengths. The imperial lengths noted on the packaging represent the closest fractional approximation.

FAQs

The primary difference among our 23 Gauge Headless Pinners is the maximum fastener length the tool can drive. 1-3/16" for the P630, 1-3/8" for the P635, 1-3/4" for the P645 and 2" for the P650. All these tools can drive pins as short as 3/8". Beginning with the P635, new features were added and carried out for all subsequent models. These features, not found in the P630, include rear exhaust with silencer, no-mar tip, stepped magazine, large fastener viewing window, and spring-loaded magazine latch. In the two larger tools, the P645 and P650, there is also the option of the Auto Lock-out feature which prevents empty (dry) firing and alerts the user when reloading is necessary.

The Auto Lock-out feature is found on the P645L and P650L models. When the tool magazine has approximately 6 ~ 7 fasteners remaining, the auto lock-out mechanism will activate and lock the primary trigger to prevent empty (dry) firing. This alerts the user to reload more fasteners. But these last remaining fasteners act as a "reserve tank" and can be driven by depressing the Lock-out Override. This allows the user to complete what their doing until re-loading is more convenient. ie. when up on a ladder. This feature is only found in the larger tools because of their primary use for installation work where it's commonly difficult to see if a pin was driven even if there's a hole. ie. ceiling crown installation. Note that the Auto-Lockout feature will lock the trigger by default if 3/8" pins are used. The tools can drive 3/8" pins as long as the Lock-Out Override is depressed.

Technically, both the P650 and P650L can drive 3/8" length pins. However, because of the Auto-Lockout feature in the P650L, the trigger will lock by default if 3/8" pins are used. The tool can drive 3/8" pins as long as the Lock-Out Override is depressed. But because of the inconvenience of constantly needing to depress the override, we do not recommend the use of the P650L if 3/8" length pins are heavily used.

Your Grex pinners are designed to only drive headless pins. When we developed our first pinner over 10 years ago, our testing showed that a tool that drives both headless and slight headed pins had a significantly higher risk of jamming which eventually resulted in tool damage. The reason is the looser tolerances required to accommodate both types of fasteners. So we decided to use purely headless pins. Keep in mind that for any fastener, whether it be a framing nail or a pin, it's the friction from the fastener shank that provides the holding power; not the head. That plus the toeing or angling of the fastener towards one another. And if you want to use a 23 gauge fastener because of the small hole it leaves, then why put a head on it to make it bigger?

Although any brand of 23 GAUGE HEADLESS PINS are compatible with your Grex pinner, Grex pins are highly recommended due to the optimal tensile strength of the steel used. Some "aftermarket" pins are so soft that they will actually deflect in cedar and pine. Others will crumple on the surface of your workpiece because they do not have the stiffness to penetrate maple or oak or other hardwoods. Using poor quality pins can cause jamming and damage to your tool because their tolerances are not controlled or they have excess glue drips all over them. Some other pins are OK for softwoods and softer hardwoods like cherry but not for real hardwoods like maple and equatorial hardwoods. Grex pins really are the stiffest pins on the market. Because 23 gauge pins are extremely fine, using quality fasteners is much more critical than traditional finish nails such as 18 or 16 gauge brads.

Any Grex dealer that sells our pinners will also carry a variety of Grex 23 gauge headless pin lengths. We recommend contacting the dealer where you purchased your tool from, whether it be a brick-and-mortar store or an online retailer. Or please use our dealer finder to locate your nearest Grex dealer.

The Auto-Adjust magazine eliminates the need to make any adjustments to the magazine when using any fastener length. This is accomplished by auto sensing fingers that ride above the strip of fasteners in the magazine to guarantee their alignment. Because the tool has been designed to accommodate 1-3/16" and 1-3/8" pin lengths, it's physically not possible to insert an additional auto sense finger for 1-1/4" length pins. Although 1-1/4" length pins can be loaded into the magazine, its use is highly discouraged because the fasteners may move out of alignment inside the magazine and resulting in jamming and/or damage to the tool.

Designed in the US. Parts manufactured in Taiwan. Tool assembled in Taiwan.

Each Grex pinner comes in a plastic carrying case with a pair of safety goggles, a bottle of tool oil, a set of hex (allen) keys and a comprehensive owner's manual.

The No-mar tip found on all the rest of the Grex pinners is not compatible with the P630. There are notches designed on the nose piece of the other pinners to receive small tabs on the inside face of the No-mar tip to lock it in place. Although a No-mar tip can be placed onto the nose of the P630, it will not lock in place and can potentially fall off during operation of the tool

The No-mar tip is exactly the same for all the Grex pinners (exception: No-mar tip not compatible with the P630). Although the color of the No-mar tip may be different, it does not represent any difference in material or specifications.

Yes, your Grex pinner must be lubricated to function properly and minimize internal wear. Put one to two drops of tool oil into the air inlet for about every 2,000 pins driven. If an in-line oiler is used, lubrication through the air inlet is not required. Do not over lubricate your tool. Doing so may also effect your tool's performance. Typically, if you notice oil coming out from the nose area when you drive pins, it's an indication that too much oil has been used.

However, in the P645L and P650L, which are equipped with the Auto Lock-out feature, the trigger will lock by default if 3/8" pins are used. The tool can drive 3/8" pins as long as the Lock-Out Override is depressed.

We only offer our products through qualified dealers and distributors. Please locate your nearest brick-and-mortar dealer using the dealer finder on the following page. Or you can also purchase our pinners through a variety popular online power tool retailers.

Generally speaking, when working with traditional hardwoods such red oak and maple, maintain an operating air pressure of 100psi. For pin lengths longer than 1-3/8", maintain the operating air pressure at 110psi. For harder woods, your Grex pinner can be operated at a higher air pressure. Because of the precision required to drive 23 gauge pins, optimal operating air pressures are much more crucial to minimizing wear and prevent damage to your tool. Insufficient operating air pressures will prevent your tool from setting pins all the way into your work piece and also cause the driver to drive pins in at insufficient speeds. This forces the driver to “push” rather than quickly “punch” pins into the work piece resulting in excessive stress on the driver tip, which will lead to increased wear and damage. However, excessive operating air pressures may set pins too deep into your work piece, damage the work piece, over stress the tool and increase driver wear.

Most compressors today max out at 120 psi, which is more than sufficient for using your Grex pinner. Refer to your owner's manual for detailed instructions on operating your Grex pinner at the appropriate air pressure. All Grex pinners require very little air consumption, less than 2/1000ths of a cubic feet per cycle at any given operating air pressure. However, operating the tool at sufficient air pressures is much more critical. The typical operating range for your Grex pinner is 90 to 100psi. When driving pins longer than 1-3/8" the operating pressure must be maintained at 110psi. For harder woods, your Grex pinner can be operated at a higher air pressure. So when choosing an air compressor, the most important specification is the maximum pressure it can sustain. Although, the air consumption of your Grex pinners are low, choosing a compressor with a decent sized tank (about 2 gallons) is necessary to maintain the air pressure to the tool. The smaller the tank, the quicker the air pressure drops as you're using the tool. This is also dependent on the kick-in pressure set on the compressor. Make sure you can adjust the kick-in pressure so the compressor begins pumping again before the air pressure drops below the required operating pressure. Refer to your compressor’s owner’s manual for more information on your compressor’s settings.

Typically, the choice of which Grex pinner to own can be narrowed down to either the P635 or P650L. If you're primarily working in the shop, building cabinets or furniture, then the 1-3/8" maximum pin length of the P635 is usually sufficient for all your applications. If instead you are involved more so with on-site installation work, such as baseboards and hanging ceiling crown, then you'll need the full 2" pin length capacity of the P650L. For those that don't need all the features of the P635 and would like to save some money, then the P630 is a perfect alternative. It's a no frills tool, but still offers the same adjust-free magazine and ability to drive pins up to 1-3/16" long (just 3/16" shy of the P635's maximum pin length). For those that want the versatility to drive longer pins, but don't want to pay the premium for a P650L, then the P645L is a great compromise. It's offered at a price point between the P635 and P650L, and has the ability to drive pins up to 1-3/4" long (just 1/4" shy of the P650L's maximum pin length).

Absolutely. All Grex pinners are designed and tested to drive its respective maximum pin length into traditional hardwoods such as red oak and maple. That's up to 2" long for the P650 and P650L models. These tools will drive fasteners into even hardwoods, such as Beech or even Ipe when the operating pressure is increased accordingly. Please note, driving pins into harder woods, will wear out the driver quicker.

Yes, up to 2" long into the toughest woods. But there will be times it won't. Depending on the wood grain, sometimes an 18 gauge brad won't even drive in straight. Of course the shorter the pin, the more likely it will drive in straight. But the quality of the fastener is also extremely critical, especially for long pins. The carbon content of Grex pins are adjusted for each pin length to optimize its tensile strength. This maximizes its ability to penetrate straight into the wood. The precision manufactured parts on all Grex pinners also increase the chances of pins driving in straight. Also, by positioning the tool perpendicular to the wood grain, the chiseled end of the pins will tend to cut the grain instead of following it off to the side.

The most common reason for this problem is insufficient operating air pressure. Check the line pressure coming from your compressor. The second most common reason is not holding the tool down firmly. Make sure the nose of the tool is held firmly onto the work piece and do not let the tool bounce back when a pin is driven. Because these fasteners are so fine, even the smallest gap left between the tool nose and work surface will prevent the tool from setting the pin all the way. If the issue is not dependent on the pin length used, then it's possible that the driver is damaged. No. The pin does not have sufficient strength to penetrate steel and this could cause damage to the tool's driver.

Due to the kind of work folks use pinners for, a depth of drive knob is not practical. Your Grex pinner arrives from the factory with a set depth of about 10 to 20 thousandths of an inch. This depth is primarily a function of the distance to which the driver blade extends out of the pinner when shooting. Depending on the hardness of your workpiece, a greater depth of set may be possible by increasing the operating air pressure. If you wish for an even greater depth of set, you can do the following. DISCLAIMER. This modification is irreversible and if done improperly may result in tool damage. Proceed with caution and only attempt if you are highly experienced with pneumatic nailer operation and maintenance. Using a file, NOT A GRINDER, take a couple of passes over the tip of the pinner nose, from side to side, not front to back. Then try to take a shot into a piece of scrap. If this depth is suitable, you are done, if not, repeat. Do not take so much off the tip of the tool that the driver blade comes out by more than 1/32 of an inch. This modification may potentially compromise the longevity of your driver.

Actually, only you can decide whether a Grex is the best pinner based upon all your criteria. While Grex pinners tend to be a little more expensive than other brands, they also offer some things that others don’t. The most advanced ergonomic features like perfect balance, muffled rear exhaust, larger sighting windows, auto-adjust magazines, stepped magazines that allow you to get right into corners, swivel couplings to take the strain off the hose, and removable soft tips for softwoods and for pinpoint placement of fasteners. Your Grex pinner will also tend to perform better than other brands due to the manufacturing tolerances and power that enable you to shoot straight and into the hardest woods out there. You won’t have a lot of problems with your Grex pinner either. It’s made of aluminum and hardened steel, inside and out, and built to the highest standards of quality. But the main reason why folks love their Grex pinners is that sense of fulfillment in working with a tool that is simply at the height of its game: a visually and functionally refined product that is the result of over 10 years of pinner evolution combined with the pride of craftsmanship that our employees have when building pinners that carry the Grex name. Put one in your hand, open the magazine, slide in some pins and you’ll see what we mean.
